A development project intended to revamp Baltimore’s 28-acre State Center into a residential and retail hub is in the works, state officials said Thursday.

Alongside the unveiling of the new project, state officials announced their hopes to hire a consultant to help develop a plan for the site, with Maryland’s Economic Development Corporation issuing a request for proposals Thursday afternoon.

Also known as MEDCO, the state corporation initially was created by Maryland’s General Assembly and works to enhance economic opportunity across the state through the funding of development projects.

Maryland Department of General Services Secretary Atif Chaudhry announced the launch of the “major” redevelopment plan during a media briefing co-led with Joe McAndrew, the assistant secretary for project and delivery for the Maryland Department of Transportation.
